Job Description

Fire Fighter III positions may be assigned to drive and operate specialized apparatus such as light and air equipment, water tenders, foam apparatus and aerial ladder tillers in extinguishing fires, supporting operations and assisting in other emergencies; service and maintain specialized equipment and apparatus; lead crew members and participate in pre-fire planning and fire prevention inspections; administer first aid; lead, plan and assist in conducting and participating in training sessions and drills; maintain fire stations and grounds; prepare reports and maintain records on equipment condition and operation; provide technical instruction and training to personnel in fire behavior, suppression and the operation and maintenance of fire equipment and apparatus; and perform other duties and fire operations support functions as assigned. NOTES: • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). • Fire Fighter III employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results. You must meet the following requirements by the last date to apply, unless otherwise indicated. EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time experience as a Fire Fighter II with the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. NOTE: • Time served in a training capacity as part of a Fire Academy does NOT count toward meeting the experience requirement. EDUCATION/TRAINING: Successful completion of the following classes: • San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Driver Operator Course. • Fire & Emergency Services Instructor 1. • Three or more of the following technical rescue courses (or their equivalent): • Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Technician • Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations • Rope Rescue Technician • Confined Space Rescue Technician • Structure Collapse Specialist 1 • Structure Collapse Specialist 2 • Water Rescue Technician • Trench Rescue Technician • Machinery Rescue Technician • Heavy Vehicle Rescue Technician CERTIFICATES: You must have ALL of the following valid certificates: • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate or a Paramedic License issued ONLY by the State of California or by the National Registry (NREMT-Basic) or by an EMT or Paramedic certifying agency approved by the State of California. • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Card (Healthcare Provider/BLS Provider equivalent or higher) OR Advanced Cardiac Life Support Card (ACLS).
